If the sight of Tom instantly transported you back to customizing your profile with glitter graphics, auto-playing songs, and carefully arranging your Top 8 friends, you’re not alone.
More than 20 years after Myspace changed social media forever, the platform’s owners say it’s getting another shot at life.
Tim and Chris Vanderhook, who purchased Myspace in 2011, have confirmed they’re planning a relaunch. In a new documentary simply titled Myspace, Tim says the company is “waiting for the right time” before bringing the iconic platform back.
This isn’t the first revival attempt. After acquiring Myspace, the brothers tried transforming it into a music-focused destination, but the effort struggled as advertisers and users flocked to Facebook and other emerging social media platforms.
Still, Myspace left a lasting mark on internet culture. Long before influencers, algorithms and endless scrolling, Myspace gave users complete control over their pages. You could personalize nearly everything, discover new music, and connect with artists. In fact, singer Adele has credited Myspace with helping launch her career after a friend uploaded one of her demos.
No timeline has been announced for the relaunch, and it’s anyone’s guess what a modern Myspace will look like.
One thing is certain: if Tom is still your first friend, he may soon be welcoming millions of people back. The only question is whether anyone still remembers their login… or how to code a profile with HTML.
